My Personal miniBest7: Bryan Ferry – No. 6, “Take a Chance with Me”

1982: Another Remarkable Song from Avalon

On May 28, 1982, Roxy Music released their eighth studio album, Avalon. The song I’m featuring today, “Take a Chance with Me,” appears as the seventh track on that album.

It was also released as a single later that year, reaching No. 26 on the UK Singles Chart. Although it did not achieve the same commercial success as “More Than This” or the title track, it remains one of the album’s most memorable songs.

For me, Avalon holds a special place because it was the album that first introduced me to Bryan Ferry. And among its songs, this one captures my attention within the opening moments.

It begins with mysterious guitar phrases before shifting into an unexpectedly buoyant rhythm. That surprising transition fascinated me from the very first time I heard it.

Looking beyond the music, the lyrics reveal a man who has been hurt by love but still longs for a new relationship. The brightness of the music contrasts with emotions that are far from simple. That combination makes the song especially compelling.

My Interpretation of the Lyrics

I once loved too deeply, only to be hurt and left with long, lonely nights.
Even if others call me foolish, I still believe in the way I love.
I want to believe that loving someone can bring happiness again.
So won't you take a chance with me and step into a new romance?

From Stillness to Motion: An Introduction That Defies Expectations

A Mysterious Opening Shaped by Guitar

The first thing I want to draw attention to is the guitar at the beginning of the song. Rather than establishing a clear beat, sustained notes slowly overlap, creating an unusual sense of tension.

Just as one phrase begins to fade, another emerges. The direction of the music is difficult to predict, and I always find myself listening closely to discover where it will lead.

Many conventional pop songs introduce a memorable melody almost immediately. Here, however, the atmosphere is established first through the character of the guitar’s sound, allowing the listener’s imagination to take over.

The Moment the Rhythm Takes Hold

When the drums and bass finally enter, the mood changes dramatically. A clear beat emerges, and the entire arrangement begins to move with an infectious sense of momentum.

Yet this is not the kind of rock music that simply charges forward. The crisp drumming and fluid bass lines create a groove that makes you want to move almost without realizing it.

Then Bryan Ferry begins to sing, and the complicated opening gives way to a remarkably accessible melody.

Two Contrasting Musical Personalities in One Song

What fascinates me is how different the introduction feels from the section that follows. Despite the contrast, the transition never sounds awkward or as though two unrelated songs have been joined together.

Roxy Music manages to preserve an experimental spirit while creating pop music that is immediately enjoyable. To me, this arrangement demonstrates the musical versatility the band developed over the years.

Phil Manzanera and the Art of the Ensemble

A Collaboration with Bryan Ferry

“Take a Chance with Me” was co-written by Bryan Ferry and guitarist Phil Manzanera.

Manzanera had been part of Roxy Music since their 1972 debut album, helping shape the band’s evolving sound. His early playing was often sharp and experimental, while his later work demonstrated an increasingly sophisticated approach to musical texture and arrangement.

On this recording, he makes his presence felt not through flashy technique or rapid-fire solos, but through carefully constructed phrases and distinctive tones. The guitar becomes more than accompaniment; it helps define the identity of the song.

The Musicians Behind the Recording

Alongside Manzanera, the recording features Neil Hubbard on guitar, Neil Jason on bass, and Andy Newmark on drums.

Andy Mackay contributes oboe, while Jimmy Maelen adds percussion and Fonzi Thornton provides backing vocals.

Looking at these musicians, it becomes clear that this was not simply a conventional band performance. A variety of instruments and voices were carefully brought together to create a cohesive musical arrangement.

Rhett Davies and Bob Clearmountain

Behind the scenes, Roxy Music and Rhett Davies handled production, while Bob Clearmountain was responsible for the mixing.

Each instrument can be heard with remarkable clarity, yet the overall sound remains beautifully unified. Listening carefully to the interplay between the different parts reveals just how important recording and mixing were to the final result.

The individual performances are impressive, but their integration into a complete musical statement is what truly stands out. It reflects the high production standards Roxy Music had reached by this stage of their career.

The Song’s Place Within Avalon

Track Seven: A Highlight of the Album’s Second Half

Avalon consists of ten tracks. Beginning with “More Than This,” moving through the title track, and ending with the instrumental “Tara,” the album offers a listening experience that feels complete from beginning to end.

On the original vinyl release, “Take a Chance with Me” appears as the second track on Side Two. It follows “The Main Thing” and leads into “To Turn You On.”

When I listen to the album in sequence, this placement feels particularly effective. After the rhythm-driven “The Main Thing,” the distinctive guitar introduction draws my attention in a completely different way.

How It Differs from “More Than This”

“More Than This,” the album’s opening track, is distinguished by its flowing melody and unmistakable sense of longing. “Take a Chance with Me,” by contrast, builds much of its character around the relationship between its guitar introduction and its clearly defined beat.

Listening to the two songs side by side reveals just how differently Roxy Music could approach composition and arrangement within the same album.

What makes Avalon exceptional is not merely the beauty of its individual songs. It is the way compositions with different personalities fit together into an album that feels natural and rewarding from start to finish.

An Adventurous Spirit on Their Final Studio Album

As it turned out, Avalon became Roxy Music’s final studio album. Ten years after their 1972 debut, the band had arrived at a musical style quite different from the art rock of their early days.

Yet becoming more accessible did not mean abandoning their willingness to experiment.

“Take a Chance with Me” is a fine example of this. Even within its sophisticated pop sound, I can still hear the curiosity and adventurous thinking that had characterized Roxy Music from the beginning.

“Shall We Try Love Again?” — A Man Who Has Been Hurt Before

What a Past Relationship Leaves Behind

The title “Take a Chance with Me” can be understood as an invitation: “Why don’t we take a chance together?”

But the narrator is not a man overflowing with romantic confidence. He speaks of having loved someone deeply and of the sorrow that followed, leaving him lonely for a long time.

Perhaps he had once been so absorbed in love that he could no longer see things clearly. There is a suggestion of regret as he looks back on his past.

Nevertheless, he has not rejected love itself. Despite what he has experienced, he remains unwilling to abandon the possibility of caring deeply for someone again.

The Uncertainty Beneath His Confidence

The lyrics suggest a man who continues to believe in his own approach to love, even if others consider him foolish.

At the same time, he cannot be certain how the other person feels. However strong his emotions may be, he understands that love does not always lead to a happy outcome.

I find this combination of outward confidence and private uncertainty deeply human.

In love, there is only so much we can decide for ourselves. A new relationship cannot begin unless the other person is also willing to take that first step.

That is why I hear more than hope in his invitation. There is also the vulnerability of someone waiting for an answer he cannot predict.

Why Such Sadness Is Set to Upbeat Music

Read on their own, the lyrics describe a past that has been anything but happy. Yet the song itself moves to a buoyant rhythm.

To me, that contrast suggests someone trying to move forward without pretending that his sadness has disappeared.

Having experienced heartbreak, he naturally approaches another romance with caution. But he does not want to remain trapped in the past forever.

What the song expresses, I believe, is not naive optimism about romance, but the determination to try again despite knowing the risks.

Bryan Ferry’s Voice and the Complexities of Mature Love

A Vocal Style That Never Overstates Emotion

Bryan Ferry’s appeal goes far beyond the beauty of his voice. Through his distinctive phrasing and subtle variations at the ends of lines, he gives even familiar words an unusual emotional character.

In this song, he rarely resorts to dramatic displays of passion. Instead, he maintains a slightly mannered elegance while expressing his feelings toward the person he hopes to win over.

Yet his performance never sounds emotionally empty. By avoiding excessive emphasis, he allows listeners to imagine the feelings beneath the words.

Words That Take on Meaning Through Experience

When we are young, there are moments when simply being in love seems reason enough to act. As we experience more relationships, however, we come to understand that affection alone cannot resolve every difficulty.

Past experiences, the other person’s wishes, and the realities of the future all begin to matter. Even with that awareness, someone can still unexpectedly capture our heart.

That is the kind of emotional complexity I hear in the narrator of this song.

Ferry’s performance has an appeal quite different from the unrestrained enthusiasm of youthful romance. His character seems cautious, occasionally proud, yet still determined to communicate what he feels.

The way this character comes to life through Ferry’s voice is another reason the song has remained a personal favorite of mine.

Final Thoughts: Finding the Courage to Love Again

“Take a Chance with Me” reminds me of everything that first drew me to Avalon.

The inventive guitar introduction, the carefully constructed arrangement, and Ferry’s unmistakable vocals all come together with remarkable ease.

But revisiting the lyrics has helped me appreciate another dimension of the song.

No matter how cautiously we approach love, we can never predict its outcome. Yet without taking a chance, a new relationship may never begin.

The narrator has known heartbreak, but he still hopes that someone will take that step with him. There is a kind of courage in his invitation that cannot be explained by youthful enthusiasm alone.

“Take a Chance with Me” is not a song that promises romantic success. It is about the simple human desire to believe in someone again, even when the future remains uncertain.

And the fact that Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music could express such a feeling through music this stylish is precisely what makes them so special to me.
