My Personal miniBest7: No. 2 — “Avalon”

1982: The Artistic Heights Roxy Music Reached

At No. 2 is “Avalon” by Roxy Music.

In May 1982, Roxy Music released their eighth studio album, Avalon. Today, I’m featuring its title track.

The album spent a total of three weeks at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and became a million-seller in Britain. The single “Avalon” also reached No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart.

Ten years had passed since the band’s debut in 1972. Once known for flamboyant fashion and experimental music, Roxy Music had evolved into a group capable of creating an elegant, sophisticated, distinctly urban sound.

What draws me to “Avalon” goes beyond its beautiful melody. Bryan Ferry’s wistful vocals, the fluid rhythm, and the many layers of instrumentation come together to evoke the atmosphere of a single unforgettable night.

To me, “Avalon” is one of the most beautiful recordings to emerge from British music in the 1980s.

My Poetic Interpretation

The party is over, and all that's left is the weariness of the night.
Then you appear, and somehow we understand each other without a word.
As we surrender to the samba rhythm, everything around us fades, leaving a world that belongs to us alone.
It doesn't matter where we're going. All I want is to lose myself in this moment.
A place where dreams and reality become one — that is Avalon.

A Quick Introduction
The title track from Roxy Music's 1982 album Avalon, featuring Bryan Ferry's smooth, slightly weary vocals and an exquisitely polished arrangement.
Its dreamlike visuals and graceful rhythm create a sophisticated, sensual atmosphere that captures the band's mature artistic vision.

The Story Begins When the Party Ends

A Mysterious Woman Appears at the End of a Glamorous Night

The lyrics of “Avalon” begin after a party has ended. The guests have departed, and the weary narrator suddenly finds himself in the presence of a woman.

What’s intriguing is how little we’re told about their relationship. Have they known each other for years, or are they meeting for the first time? The lyrics leave that question unanswered.

Yet there seems to be an understanding between them that requires no conversation. It’s one of those moments when gestures and glances can communicate more than words.

The Beginning of Romance, or Just a Fleeting Illusion?

In a conventional love song, we might expect the story to move from an initial encounter toward romance. But “Avalon” offers no such clear progression.

We don’t know whether the narrator loves the woman, or whether she feels anything for him. Even so, something unmistakably intimate seems to exist between them.

I sense a delicate emotional distance between two adults. Perhaps what this song captures isn’t the beginning of love itself, but the anticipation that something might be about to happen.

The Allure of Not Knowing Where You’re Going

Later in the song, as the dancing continues, the surroundings seem to blur, and the narrator loses any clear sense of where he’s heading.

Under ordinary circumstances, such uncertainty might feel unsettling. Here, however, it becomes strangely comforting. His attention seems completely absorbed by the woman and the music.

There are no promises about the future and no conversations about the past. For that brief moment, nothing else seems to matter.

The Beauty of “Avalon” Begins with Its Rhythm

Samba, Bossa Nova, and a Wonderful Sense of Weightlessness

One of the most striking things about “Avalon” is how relaxed it feels without ever losing its sense of movement.

The lyrics refer to samba and bossa nova. In the recording itself, gentle percussion and a supple bass line give the music its distinctive pulse.

That doesn’t mean the band is simply recreating Brazilian music. Instead, Latin-inspired elements are woven into sophisticated British pop, producing something unmistakably their own.

What I particularly enjoy is the bass. Rather than merely keeping time, it seems to glide between the melodic phrases.

It’s music you can dance to without ever needing to move energetically. Even sitting comfortably in a chair, I find myself responding to its rhythm.

Guitar and Keyboards Paint the Colors of the Night

Guitarist Phil Manzanera doesn’t try to overwhelm the listener with dramatic solos. Instead, his short phrases and delicate tones subtly change the character of the music.

I’ve always loved this approach to guitar playing. Sometimes it’s the seemingly incidental notes behind the lead vocal that make me want to listen more closely.

Andy Mackay’s saxophone and the warm keyboard textures are equally memorable. Each instrument brings its own character, yet everything contributes to a beautifully unified arrangement.

Discovering the Depth of the Sound Through Headphones

With repeated listening, you begin to notice small details in the background and the moments when one instrument gives way to another. Through headphones, the placement and texture of individual sounds become especially apparent.

The song doesn’t need dramatic changes to hold my attention. The closer I listen, the more there is to appreciate.

The Understated Sensuality of Bryan Ferry’s Voice

A Vocal Style That Combines Tenderness and Weariness

On “Avalon,” Ferry rarely raises his voice. He begins in a low, gentle register, letting the ends of his phrases tremble slightly as he carries the melody forward.

There’s sweetness in his voice, but it isn’t simply soothing. At times, he sounds tired, almost a little bored.

Yet when that wistful delivery meets the elegant instrumentation, it creates a remarkable sense of sensuality.

You don’t have to sing loudly to convey passion. Ferry’s performance is a wonderful demonstration of that idea.

The Chance Encounter Behind the Female Vocals

The song also features Haitian singer Yanick Étienne, whose involvement has a fascinating story behind it.

While working on “Avalon” in a New York recording studio, Ferry and producer Rhett Davies happened to hear a woman singing in a neighboring studio. They were immediately captivated by her voice.

That singer was Étienne. They invited her to contribute to the recording, and her vocals became one of its most distinctive elements.

Her soaring, expressive voice provides a striking contrast to Ferry’s low, wistful delivery.

A voice discovered entirely by chance became an essential part of the song. It’s a reminder that some of music’s most memorable moments come from encounters nobody could have planned.

The Meaning Behind the Name “Avalon”

The Mystical Island of Arthurian Legend

The name “Avalon” is associated with a mysterious island in the legends of King Arthur.

According to the legend, the wounded King Arthur was taken there. Over the centuries, Avalon has been portrayed as a place unlike the ordinary world, possessing an almost supernatural significance.

Of course, Roxy Music’s lyrics don’t directly retell the Arthurian story.

What interests me more is the mysterious quality of the name itself. A party late at night, a woman who suddenly appears, and surroundings that seem to change with the music — together, these images suggest a place beyond everyday reality.

The Longing to Escape Everyday Reality

Sometimes we long to step outside the familiar world of our daily lives. That doesn’t necessarily mean traveling somewhere far away.

Simply listening to a favorite song can take our thoughts somewhere entirely different. For me, “Avalon” has exactly that effect.

Perhaps Avalon is a special place within the imagination, somewhere along the boundary between dreams and reality.

The Culmination of Roxy Music’s First Decade

From Experimental Rock to Sophisticated Pop

When Roxy Music emerged in 1972, they immediately stood apart from other bands.

Bryan Ferry’s flamboyant clothing, Brian Eno’s electronic sounds, and the unpredictable structures of their songs challenged conventional ideas about what rock music could be.

From Manifesto in 1979 to Flesh + Blood in 1980, and finally Avalon in 1982, the band’s sound gradually shifted toward smoother arrangements that emphasized rhythm and melody.

The early recordings had the excitement of the unexpected. Their later work offered a different pleasure: music that seemed to grow richer with every listen.

Avalon: Their Final Studio Album

Released in 1982, Avalon remains Roxy Music’s final studio album.

After touring in 1983, the band went on hiatus. Although they later reunited for live performances, they have never released another studio album.

We shouldn’t assume they intended Avalon to be their final statement when they recorded it. Even so, there’s something remarkable about a band that spent a decade evolving and ultimately left behind an album of such extraordinary quality.

Why I Ranked “Avalon” No. 2 — A Decision Shaped by Memory

It Was Originally My No. 1 Choice

Here’s something I haven’t mentioned yet. Until just before I started writing this article, I fully intended to place “Avalon” at No. 1. That’s how much I love this song, and my feelings about it haven’t changed.

But in the end, I switched the rankings. The song I ultimately chose for the top spot was the very song that first introduced me to Roxy Music. For that reason, it holds a particularly special place in my heart.

If I were judging purely by musical craftsmanship and listening pleasure, “Avalon” could easily have taken first place. But the impression left by my first encounter with the band’s music was something I simply couldn’t ignore.

“Avalon” didn’t fall to No. 2 because I consider it inferior. It came second because the song at No. 1 is inseparable from my own musical memories.

And that’s exactly what makes this My Personal miniBest7. These rankings aren’t meant to be objective judgments. They’re shaped by my own tastes, experiences, and memories.

What Sets “Avalon” Apart from “Jealous Guy”

My previous selection, No. 3, was “Jealous Guy”, another song I love dearly.

“Jealous Guy” tells the story of a man regretting the pain he caused someone he loves. Ferry’s interpretation of John Lennon’s song is a remarkable performance, distinguished by his unmistakable vocal style.

In “Avalon,” by contrast, the narrator’s emotions are never clearly explained. Instead, we experience the difficult-to-describe excitement of an unexpected encounter.

I placed “Avalon” one position above “Jealous Guy” because it’s not just Ferry’s singing that appeals to me. The entire musical atmosphere, including the instrumentation, suits my personal taste exceptionally well.

Final Thoughts — A Dreamlike Night Preserved in Music

Whenever I listen to “Avalon,” I’m reminded of the mysterious power music can have.

It doesn’t bring back one particular event from my past. Yet as soon as the song begins, I feel as though time starts moving differently.

A woman appears after the party has ended. The lyrics never tell us what ultimately becomes of that encounter.

But I don’t think we need to know.

In life, there are moments when the feelings we experience stay with us far longer than the eventual outcome.

Perhaps “Avalon” is a song that captures the beauty of one such fleeting moment.

My Personal miniBest7, No. 2 — “Avalon.”

And whenever I want to spend a quiet evening enjoying beautiful music, I know this is a song I’ll keep coming back to.
