🎧 Coming in at No. 7 is “Anytime”

In my previous post, I introduced “Feeling That Way” as the 8th song in my Personal Top 10. If you are a passionate fan, you probably already guessed which song was coming next. (Though I did give a spoiler in the last article! ( ;∀;))
That’s right, coming in at No. 7 is the masterpiece “Anytime”, which hits you with a massive wave of momentum, also from their phenomenal 1978 album Infinity.

The seamless transition from the previous track is so perfect that these two songs are almost always played as a set, whether on the radio, live, or in our memories. Tearing through the lingering echoes of the previous song—which rose from silence and nostalgia—the opening bursts forth with a striking acoustic guitar stroke and a thick, heavenly chorus. It’s a moment that makes my blood pump every time I hear it.

In the previous 8th place entry, I touched on the appeal of the “vocal intersection” between the old and new vocalists. For this 7th place, I would like to focus on the “overwhelming power and driving force” of the band as they entered a completely new dimension and sprinted toward the pinnacle of stadium rock.

Super Translation (My Interpretation)

I'm waiting for you anytime with open arms.
If you want me, if you need me, I'm right here.
With just a little spark, your shadows can be erased.
So don't hesitate to tell me—anytime, again and again.

First, please listen to the official audio

Steve Perry's soaring vocals and the synth-driven 80s sound blend brilliantly.

Queen’s Magic and Boston’s Breeze? ~ The Wall of Sound Set by a Master ~

Now, when listening to “Anytime,” many of you might have had your ears perk up and thought, “Hmm?” In particular, the thick, multi-layered chorus work that hits you full blast from the intro makes you feel, “This sounds kind of like a Queen song.” Also, you might intuitively feel that the fusion of driving guitars and harmonies resembles “the refreshing vibe of Boston.”

Actually, your intuition is spot on.

First, regarding the similarity to Queen, there is a clear explanation. The album Infinity was produced by none other than Roy Thomas Baker. He is the mastermind who supported Queen’s golden era, including A Night at the Opera, and produced the legendary “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

This was the first time Journey utilized his signature recording magic—layering vocal tracks dozens or hundreds of times to construct a massive “Wall of Sound.” The result of layering Steve Perry’s extraordinary high notes with the gritty mid-to-low tones of Gregg Rolie and the others—like a mille-feuille via Queen-style multitracking—is this incredibly divine chorus work in “Anytime.”

On the other hand, what about the relationship with Boston? There is no direct personal connection or shared producer here. However, the sound of “thick choruses and hard, melodic guitars” created by Boston—who debuted in 1976 and instantly took the world by storm—was a clear pinnacle and a massive trend in the American hard rock scene at the time.

It is no wonder that Journey, freeing themselves from the spell of progressive rock and transforming into a more crowd-pleasing arena rock band, unconsciously absorbed and elevated that era’s atmosphere—the “new wind of rock blown by Boston,” so to speak.

Explosive Band Ensemble ~ The Dynamism of Neal Schon ~

Although it’s easy to get captivated solely by the sheer power of the vocals in “Anytime,” the reason this song is highly praised as a “blueprint for arena rock” that electrifies stadiums lies in the incredible heat and meticulous ensemble generated by the entire band.

The Intersection of Acoustic and Electric

In the previous 8th place track, Feeling That Way, Neal Schon’s guitar delivered a highly restrained and emotional performance, as if nestling close to a twilight scene. However, the moment it seamlessly transitions into “Anytime,” his guitar begins to leap like a beast unleashed from its cage.

  • Driving Rhythmic Strumming: The acoustic guitar strokes forcefully pulling the song forward give the entire track a dry West Coast breeze and an intense driving force to push ahead.
  • Flash-like Obbligato: The electric guitar sharply cuts through the gaps. The composition of Steve Perry’s sky-piercing high notes clashing head-on with Neal Schon’s weeping guitar and scattering sparks became the greatest weapon that would later propel Journey into a world-class stadium band.

The “Ray of Light” Depicted in the Lyrics ~ A Spark to Erase the Shadows ~

The imagery sung in the latter half of this song is incredibly beautiful and gives courage to the listener.

From Unconditional Affirmation to a Prayer for Light

In the first half of the song, the stance of unconditionally accepting the other person with open arms is sung repeatedly: “I’m right here anytime you want me.” However, as the heat builds towards the second half, the protagonist doesn’t just wait, but strongly begins to demand from the other, “Give me all of your sunshine.”

To erase the dark “shadows” that have fallen in the heart, all that is needed is a tiny “spark.” With just that one ray of light you give, any darkness can be swept away.

From “Stillness” to “Motion” ~ No. 7 as the Perfect Catharsis ~

If the 8th place song, “Feeling That Way,” represents “nostalgia for passing seasons and a quiet premonition of a new path,” then this 7th place song, “Anytime,” is “the explosive catharsis of sprinting down that new path with body and soul.”

Emergence from a Chrysalis into a Butterfly

The meaning behind these two songs being played continuously as a medley lies exactly here. It is because there is a time to wander, stand still, and quietly reflect on oneself that the straightforward, powerful message that follows—”I’ll accept you anytime,” “erase the shadows with light”—shakes the heart with multiplied force.

After passing through a progressive experimental phase, Journey finally found “melodies anyone can hum” and “a thick sound that envelops a stadium.” This is the moment those two elements perfectly materialized for the first time.

Conclusion: A Monument That Forced Open the Door to the Golden Age

My Personal Top 10 [Journey Edition], No. 7 was “Anytime”.

The bluesy grit of Gregg Rolie and the overwhelming breakthrough feel of Steve Perry. And the “Wall of Sound” set up by the master producer. Fused in a miraculous balance, this track is also a historical document of Journey’s transformation from a mere rock band into an era-defining monster band.
